There are so many opportunities for 'the arts' here in Tucson; in one week there are probably more than Durango offers in one year. Yesterday was a community theater production of Mary Poppins. The play was written in 1934 and is a mock on how the traditional British middle class raised their children...a nanny, the mother a social
climber and the father the 'bread winner' with little connection to his children. George was a strict and driven banker who expected perfection from his family. In comes Mary Poppins, a very untraditional nanny who guides the family towards what really matters: love, joy, and connection.
The Disney movie of Mary Poppins came out in 1964...I loved it. But the deeper meaning of the story did not dawn on me until seeing this version. This is a story of redemption. It is the story of us, humans, who often get caught in the trappings of work, the stress of everyday life and losing sight of what matters most, family and friends. Mary Poppins is the vehicle of that change for the Banks family.
Watching talent bring a story to life is magical.
