Craig came to visit! He helped Jay build our guest house. He moved away, but is back for a visit with Jay and friends, choosing to help Jay finish our floors on a vacation day! It was the final coat of finish so we can't walk on it for a bit. Instead, when I got home from work, I put my iPad up against the window of the dining room door and snapped a photo from the outside in. There is reflection and fuzziness, but now you can see the great job Jay did on the floor. I can't wait to move back in.

My life has been a bit out of control for the past week. One might think that working in a church was all about 'calm', gratefulness, prayer and contemplation. Well, moments of it are, but certainly not this week. So my drives to work each day and my returns home to see progress were my joys. One day I saw a Jack rabbit (standing so tall) by the side of the road, several flocks of turkey. many, many fields of deer, including several good sized buck and a small herd of elk. That day I was also gifted with having green lights ALL the way to the gym in the early morning. I'd say that is about 18 lights in 8 miles. So much was accomplished this week. The walls are done… 2 primer and 2 finish coats. The floor has to be 'filled in' because the wall was pushed out leaving the need for more flooring. Thankfully we still had some of the same old barn wood so he and Matt have been able to piece together enough to complete the kitchen floor. They will finish the floor today by filling in the needed hall flooring. Wayne installed the can lights and they are all working. The first 2 cupboards were put into place yesterday! Woo Hoo!! Matt has unboxed many more so I expect more will be hung today. Yesterday I went to our preferred counter place and bought a piece of Corion for a new window sill over the sink (this window). I still have not selected any tile, but hopeful this Saturday I will get that accomplished. And lastly, Russ high school roommate from Taft School is visiting. Ed Ernst is such fun and thankfully an easy guest as he is sleeping in a construction zone! He has the in house guest room and bath which is within the dust zone. I told him it would be cushy camping. Ed is holding up our new modem. Ours died and had to be replaced. Not to big an issue and they got is all hooked up and working… thus, I was able to do this posting!
It was such fun to walk into the kitchen after work! It is all sheet rocked and ready for the tile backsplash. It feels so good. It looks modern. The space will be 'of' the open floor plan, but completely set apart. I am definitely going to like it. There is wood flooring under all that protective flooring. Right now I can't quite wrap my head around how different and bright it will be. We have always had dark cupboards. I grew up with dark cupboards. White will be a huge change; we were right to choose white though. As Russ' stability continues to deteriorate, white/light will offer a new level of safety. Jay and Matt, we thank you for all your great work.
Jay and Matt had a busy day. I didn't get home from work until dusk so the photos had to be taken with work lights and the coloring is off a bit.
Today the shortened wall got sheet rocked on the kitchen side. They also worked on the new ceiling look which also got sheet rocked. I am very excited about that! Our house has gone through many remodels since it was built in 1980 and there were/are some unusual 'glitches'. One was the transition from the dining room ceiling to the kitchen. The ceiling line just stopped! The textures were different. It looked like the easy cheap way was taken. Now we have the opportunity to change that and the guys came up with a wonderful solution: extended soffits over the counters that will have the can lights and soffits at both end which will visually 'close in' the kitchen. They also did the less than glamorous job of some plumbing. Here in Colorado most people have crawl spaces vs. cellars. Our crawl space is not a job you want to be tagged with. Dirt floor, you have to crawl and in this case the 'job site' was on the far side of the house from the entrance, a long crawl. Ingenuity and self preservation took over… they cut a hole in the floor and slipped down to do the work. The flooring photo was just for fun. That special piece of flooring was buried under layers of other flooring. It is a dull brown and reminds me of dinosaur toe nails… and old dinosaur at that! |
