Let me start with our trip down… I thought it might be fun to break the trip into 2 days and stay in Winslow, AZ. We stayed at La Pasada Hotel, the last great railroad hotel built in 1929 by the Santa Fe Railway for the Fred Harvey Company. This was Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter's Southwest masterpiece and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She also designed some of the great lodges of National Parks.
The hotel was about to be razed when a painter, a sculptor and an architect bought it and brought it back to life.
This hotel, and others along the train line, brought over 100,000 railroad station waitresses to the American West. The hotels became a workplace for women changing history, an opportunity that 'allowed' women a new and adventurous role.
We stayed at Enchantment Resort, nested in the arm of Boynton Canyon, one of the most pronounced vortex areas in Sedona. The resort is settled against the background of the soaring red walls of the canyon.
Matt was so helpful pushing Russ, holding doors and just being sure Russ was comfortable… he is an awesome teenager!
I'll divide up the slide shows…
