We are complex we humans and acknowledging that is an important step in recognizing the deep significance of what this physical and social distancing is doing to us. In our house, I find I cannot become complacent for if I do we falter. We must use this time to reinforce our love, care and sensitivity to one another's needs. We need to use moments in our day to pray for the strength to care for one another, because we will fail at times and when that happens it's not pretty. We can't use our time to think too much about the future, but need to stay in the moment, lifting one another along the way.
This psalm ignites that thought for me, breathing new life into our mornings. We have had a few rough moments during this command performance of isolation. I am not ashamed of that. I am proud and grateful we have one another. Our path is different from yours. Each of our paths includes a full range of emotions; cries, questions, laments, praises, love and joy. Your path may hold similar feelings to ours, but in a different order with different intensities.
In the words of a Boston writer: "I guess what I’m trying to say is this: It's exhausting trying to be positive and grateful all the time. Sometimes you just need to say, "this is awful" before it's possible to gather yourself up and march on ... because really, what choice do we have? Maybe we all need to fall apart before we can be put back together."
