I did take the safety route and hire my septic vent shoveled out.
It has been an exhausting week and the sheer delight of waking this morning knowing I could actually shower and have breakfast first, made my day. I only need to do a bit of clean up later this morning, clearing perhaps an inch that fell in the evening yesterday. Oh my... a gift from heaven!
As the days wore on, as my new Indian name took hold (She with shovel hand), two thoughts continually invaded my thoughts.
- How in the world can we have homeless people living in our Durango woods? How do they prevent freezing to death? It has been years since we had such a dramatic snowfall so I am sure there are many who had no idea of how to prepare. Are they still alive? Have some perished? Have they moved down to Farmington?
- My second 'worry' has been of the people who live in Alaska. Can you begin to imagine minus 50 degrees in winter? Or having to keep your car running 24/hr a day? Can you imagine not going out of your house unless weighed down with multiple layers of clothing?
We have not had to have a winterized mindset for quite a few years now. Winters are generally so much more mild here than in Vermont. As long as the sun is out, we live in the peaceable kingdom. But this week challenged both my back and my sanity. I am grateful for the week of sun that is predicted. I need to recharge.
