I walk on Monday noon with my friend Chris. Yesterday was damp, slushy, grey and not the most beautiful day to be outside. We both agreed though that getting outside, no matter the weather, is enlivening; invigorating. The trick is to be appropriately dressed. As we talked about this I remembered my elementary years.
The very same boots you see pictured here were MY boots. The RULE in the 50s in my city was if you lived less than a mile and a half from school you walked, more you rode the bus. No discussion! And walk we did. Walking alomst a mile and a half to school with wet feet made for an uncomfortable day/
So... you have 'leggings' fit into boots and a 1.5 mile walk. Within that walk was a snow fort, a snow ball fight, some lazy snow angels... many opportunities for snow to trickle into your boots
My mother's solution? Take those Wonder Bread plastic wrappers and encase my feet. Now understand here, this was skirts for girls era. (I wasn't 'allowed' to wear 'slacks' until my senior year in high school!) So I was wearing ankle socks and a skirt/dress. I would have shoes and socks on and slip my feet into Wonder Bread! Scotch tape would be taped around the top of the bag. Snug. My bagged feet would slip into my lovely red rubber boots and dry was the name of the game.
Can you imagine any kid showing up to school today with their feet stuffed into bread bags?
