Caregivers are essential and become invaluable to those who need help. I was available to help Russ perform tasks that he could no longer do independently. Together we enhanced the quality of his life and gave him the peace of mind that he could live out his life at home. For me it was as fulfilling as it was hard.
The U.S. president has a cabinet; a group of people who surround the president and offer counsel on how to lead various parts of the government. This can be mirrored for the caregiver. We need to surround ourselves with a group stocked with people who listen, offer advice when asked and never forget the role love and care plays in supporting one another. None of us outgrow the need for support and feedback from other people who see the world differently.
A gathering of caregivers helps us make wise decisions and gives us emotional support. As we wrestle with life changing decisions, having a 'cabinet' gives us a place to share our vulnerabilities with no worry of judgment. Most people want love and acceptance first and information second. When we have failed (and we will, no one is perfect) we need hugs, not advice. Our first purpose of gathering together is to be a terrific encourager.
I love that we are attempting to build a 'cabinet' of caregivers here in Durango. I pray the essence love, care, encouragement and support guide us in our gatherings.
