Other people have voiced their joy in settling in a new home and the fun come spring of seeing what the former owner has planted in the yard. Each house I have lived in as an adult, I have done all the planting, made all the decisions. Here, in this vast new world Southern Arizona, I know nothing about the flora. Mark, the former owner, completely landscaped the yard; every plant is new me. Each new flower a mystery I must solve.
My street and yard:
desert spring -
it’s all new
southwest arizona
beauty surrounds me
but with new purpose
no need to philosophize
just enjoy
the footsteps of a warm winter
open to the heat of summer
colors of spring
ring in
but in ways of unfolding mysteries
all must be sturdy
living in the heat of desert’s day
a brilliant blossom unfurls
wrapping a prickly cactus in glorious color
stop
feast on the visual
on the delights of all things new
14 varieties
grace my yard
all new
some housed on prickly spines
others lodged in rock or sand
the essence of surprise
abounds
