"Every day you try to pick up all the pieces
All the memories, they somehow never leave you
Nobody, nobody, nobody sees you
Nobody, nobody, nobody would believe you
Nobody, nobody, nobody sees you
Nobody, nobody, nobody would believe you
God only knows what you've been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows how it's killing you
But there's a kind of love that God only knows
God only knows what you've been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows the real you
There's a kind of love that God only knows"
It is so difficult for us in our own little world of 392 Estancia Loop to connect beyond our walls. We most often (operative word being 'most') connect with our own world, but how do we share our realities with family and friends and for me the many for work/church folks who repeatedly ask how we are doing. Most often I can't really tell the truth, the down and dirty. We Americans don't encourage that reality as it is not the pretty endless picture projected to us since childhood. We Americans don't want to consider degenerative disease. We don't want to have to face saying good-bye forever. How can we stand that pain? But shouldn't we focus on our loved one?
If I were to express what is in my heart for me, as opposed to Russ, I would personally testify that our culture places a higher cost on living longer than a healthy life lived. Life is a finite resource and yet we still remain unprepared for the tsunami of death. How do I reconcile that as the spouse of my heart's song; he has a degenerative disease. It is not about me / we/ us/ family/ friends as individuals, but collectively coming to terms with mortality.
In writing this post, I beg you to be real, to be thoughtful and to be present with those in your life who may be walking this path.
