This is especially significant because this morning I decided to check out their website and I learned that just a year ago Shirli had a brain tumor removed and several follow-up surgeries. Her voice was amazing! And I thought she just had an amazing voice; I had taken that at face value. Her voice is a gift from God, hard, hard recovery work and the gifted hands of doctors. We had a wonderful treat last night for sure.
During the summer months in Durango there are free concerts at Buckley Park every Thursday night. Last night we saw the Leftover Cuties. We sat with friends to enjoy the evening of eclectic music. What a treat; both friends AND music! The group is from L.A. but seemed a perfect fit for Durango (is that an oxymoron?). The park was crowded, the music jubilant and seemed to either tug a smile or a dance from each person listening. There is a man I know from the soup kitchen, Phillp, who was there. He set the pace for everyone attending for the spirit of dancing. For the first few songs he danced alone in front of the stage, with abandon, and with an expression of sheer joy. Some might have thought him drunk or on drugs, but knowing him I am confidant he was just plain enthralled with the feeling the music brought to him. (ps. Phillip has lived in a cave for several years, has brought his life to a place where he now has a job, hope and focus). By the end of the evening the 'dance floor' was full and 'happy' was the crowd.
