I tend to be on the road at dawn and dusk which is a perfect time of day to be spotting wildlife. As I have a 17 mile drive into Durango and prefer the back roads, there is lots of opportunity for observation. The turkey vulture are definitely my least favorite. Yesterday I did however have the gift of lots of wonderful sightings going to and from work. First were two very young elk. They had such long skinny necks I was thinking more giraffe than elk. A jack rabbit ran in from of my car…I just love those critters! Two very hairy (shedding?) yearlings made me stop the car because they couldn't decide what direction they wanted to go in. There were the many herds of deer in the pastures along the way. On one stretch of road there are often hawk sightings and yesterday there were 2. The usual squirrels, magpies and prairie dogs. And the rare one for yesterday was the coyote slinking across a large field.
We'll see what today brings.
