…but I'm excited about the Furtsch's trip. Joan, Andrew and Matt landed in Italy today. When Joan studied in Italy and later worked there, we visited her… some of the places they will see, I have seen! Seems to me it is a perfect time for Matt to experience the history, architecture, art, food, beauty, hill towns, tiny shops... Here is Matt, (14 yrs, just got all A's on his end of year report, has a wonderful sense of humor and enters high school on solid ground) with Joan. The Ponte Vecchio is in the background and their hotel is the white building in the left corner of the photo. Texting is amazing… they just landed in Florence and I already have a photo of them. After spending the night on a plane, they look pretty refreshed to me. One place I hope Matt will get to see is Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. It's magnificent. I climbed to the top of the Duomo and said a prayer for my friend Thomas. I had been working for Home Health and he was one of my clients. He told story after story of living in Italy and begged me to climb to the top of the duomo. A circular staircase winds up and around the roof line, in between the roof and the frescoed ceiling. As you climbed there were tiny windows that looked out over the city and finally, reaching the top, you could see down into the sanctuary of the basilica; stunning. Joan, Andrew and Matt will spend a few days exploring Florence before joining up with Backroads Travel for a Family Biking trip through Tuscany. Here is some of what they will see... I just love arm chair travel!
