Our first trip to Switzerland inspired us both. This is just one town we visited. In our early years together, there was no computer or searching online for information. Our information source was through snail mail. I would write to the tourism office in a Provence or city, then came the anticipation of waiting for the return information packet, followed by an evening of dreaming.
A first Swiss adventure was to Aldelboden. It’s a traditional Swiss mountain village in the Bernese Highlands. We had a rail pass and could get as close as Frutigen by train before transferring to one of their regularly scheduled post busses. A funny aside is that we got off the bus one station too soon and ended up hiking for about an hour through well marked trails RIGHT THROUGH farmed fields, even stopping once to say “GruB Gott” to the farmer.
A few memories of our time in Aldeboden were getting off the bus too soon, the amazing view from our zimmer, fondue on a deck with a staggering vista, being there on the 4th of July and finding a house built in 1776, going to a yodeling festival on a mountain top, hearing alpine horns for the first time, having horses greet us on a peak to peak hike and nudging our backpacks to get our apples and sitting on a nest of fire ants while having a picnic while on that hike!
I was 34 years old, able bodied, in love and open to adventure. We needed nothing to be planned beyond our first and last night hotel reservation. The world was ours and we felt gifted; our 3 weeks delivered a trip never forgotten.
