I wasn't there. I have no picture. You will just have to imagine the scene…
A hot sweltering day on the east coast in 1965. Four friends decide the only thing to do is go to Revere Beach. They pack the car with all the essentials… towels, books (purely for show), baby oil (yup, we used to fry ourselves…literally) and a determined plan 'to pick up boys'.
Parking the car, the group makes an effort to find 'the perfect boy magnet spot'. You must assess where the boys are congregated, whether they are sitting around, throwing a football or strolling the beach. It is all very strategic in a teenage sort of earnestness.
The girls find the perfect spot of course, settle their towels and come up with a lock solid plan. Everyone will lay face down and face their head towards the rough housing boys…who just may, at any moment walk THIS way! Settled in 'wait mode', they have the plan that Kathy will say "Ready…Go" and all will stand and saunter towards the boys displaying their loveliness. The hope of course is to attract attention with their casual beauty and the boys will immediately gravitate towards them to start a meet up conversation.
Ah, Judy hits pay dirt when it comes to attracting attention that's for sure! She, among the four lovely ladies, rises to saunter towards the boys as "Ready…Go" is voiced. The downfall for Judy is that as she demurely stands, a towel loop catches in her braces and she is already moving forward in one her most embarrassing teenage moments before the teeth dangling towel trips her!
You? Ponder a teenage moment of angst right this very minute. Now, next time you see a teenager (or these days a 12 year old) who is looking awkward, feel the pain, show some grace and maybe even share a smile or hug.
